Why Home Health Care Exists

Most
people want to continue living independently in their own home. They want to be
self sufficient in their own surroundings. But all to often-certain situations –
a sudden illness, a chronic condition, the fact of aging affects peoples
ability to care for themselves and manage their daily living. This may create a
concern for family members. Since individuals overwhelmingly prefer to be
cared for at home rather than be placed at a facility. Families look for options
that will enable them to remain at home. Home Health care is an option.
There
are many advantages to receiving health care at home. By remaining at home an
individual receives the full attention of caregivers who provides one to one
assistance. Home health care provides an alternative to extended
hospitalization. Recovery is quicker in a home environment. Home health
care is often less expensive than alternatives for care, but the primary reason
is the individual is often happier and more comfortable in his or her own home.

What is Home Health Care
Home
health care needs vary from person to person. Home health care fits into 3
categories: activities of daily living, instrumental
activities of daily living and skilled care. An individual may require care in one or all
categories.
Activities of Daily Living
At timed an individual may need help with one or more activities of daily living such
as bathing, dressing, get in and out of bed, walking or transferring. Sometimes
family members or friends can offer help on an intermittent basis. When
families need assistance they may seek help with staff from a home health care
program.
Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL)
IADL’s
include activities such as shopping, light housekeeping, laundry, errands and
companionship.
Skilled
Care
A home
health care team provides skilled care in the home. The team includes a nurse,
home health aide, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and speech
therapist. The patient’s physician directs the care of the team and is an
important part of the home health care team.

registered nurse provides an in home assessment to identify your needs and
coordinate a physician authorized plan of care. The patient is involved in the
care planning process to identify their needs and goals for their rehabilitation
at home.

care and services may include wound care, IV therapy, diabetic care, catheter
care, ostomy care, respiratory assessment, medication management and pain
management.

Therapist

physical therapist assesses and provides treatment to help patients of all ages
increase mobility, strength, balance, and coordination. The Therapist also works
with the family and community resources to maximize the patient’s rehabilitation
process.

self-help and homemaking skills. Therapists help those who have suffered
physical impairment to return to their maximal level of independence.
