Certified Travelers Health Clinic

Henry County
Health Department
has been designated
as a certified
travelers’ health clinic
since January 2006.

The world is becoming a much smaller place. In 2003 over 32 million U.S. residents traveled internationally due to business trips, vacations, mission trips, disaster relief work and many more reasons that provide valuable opportunities and new experiences to millions of people.

Some very common travelers vaccines include:

·         TYPHOID VACCINE, which is used to protect the traveler from Typhoid. This is a disease spread by consuming food or water contaminated with bacterium Salmonella entericaTyphi.  Typhoid can cause high fevers, headache, malaise, loss of appetite, and splenomegaly. This vaccine protects you for two years.

·         YELLOW FEVER VACCINE, which is used to protect the traveler from Yellow Fever disease. Yellow Fever is spread thru the bite of an infected mosquito. This disease occurs only in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. Yellow Fever can cause fever, muscle pain, headache, shivers, and loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. These symptoms can worsen into a “toxic phase” where jaundice, kidney failure, and bleeding can occur, which may lead to death. Yellow Fever vaccine is required for entry to some endemic countries. This vaccine is good for ten years.

·         Due to the fact that some diseases are still prevalent in developing countries some common vaccines can also be considered travelers vaccines like polio, menactra, tetanus, MMR, and Hepatitis B and A.
Please visit our adult vaccine page for information on these common vaccines.

·         During a visit to the traveler’s health clinic the clients’ travel plans are reviewed and depending on where the client is traveling, their itinerary, and previous vaccine history, it is determined what vaccinations are needed and they are given. Information on preventative measures needed for food and water safety and insect protection are also discussed. This also includes Malaria education and consultation. Many informational handouts are available to assist the traveler. It is important to remember that some traveler’s vaccines may need to be given up to six months before travel to provide optimal benefits.
